Surrender isn’t a very popular word. We think of “giving up” as the absolute worst thing a person can do. We associate surrender with waving a white flag in humiliating defeat, losing a game, forfeiting a competition or submitting to some master, ruler, or boss. The irony is that surrender is exactly what a follower of Jesus should be doing every single day. When we pray “Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done,” we are yielding control to God the Father. We are acknowledging that God can do immeasurably more with our lives than we can… that we can fully trust in the Lord. Today we examine this second element of the Lord’s Prayer in greater detail and find redemption and fulfillment in surrendering our wills to His.
The Lord is My Shepherd
What does it mean for the Lord to be our Shepherd? According to David in Psalm 23, it means that we shall never be in want of anything. We will be made to slow down, quiet down, and sit down. Our souls will be restored and whole, like they were designed to be from the beginning. We shall not fear evil or death – no matter what we’re facing. Many of us know the Psalm… Let’s make sure we know the Shepherd.
